Box 337231
Greeley, CO 8o633
Re: Mud Truck Analytical Results
Broda- Al Platte Valley Site, 1859 North Highway 85, Brighton, Colorado
Dear Mrs. Davis:
Trucks delivering mixtures of soils and water have been received at the Broda - AI Inert
Fill site in Brighton. The trucks, commonly referred to as "mud trucks" routinely deliver
a mixture of soil and water to the Broda - AI Inert Fill site. The mud is generated by
drilling a utility access line or pothole through common soils at various locations around
the Denver Metropolitan area and elsewhere in the State. These trucks use high
pressure water to mobilize the soils and a high velocity air induction "vacuum" truck to
remove the water soil mixture from the ground. The materials removed are equal to the
material that would be removed if the trucks were digging with an excavator, and are
only mixed with clean water to allow them to be removed. This method of drilling and
potholing is useful to prevent the rupturing or breaks in utility lines.
The mud trucks have been a recent concern for regulators at the Broda - Al Inert Fill.
To remedy the concerns Broda sampled three discrete mud trucks and had them
analyzed for metals and volatile organics. The results of the sampling are shown on
Table 1 and the laboratory reports are attached. In addition to the three mud truck
analysis there is one soil analysis. When the trucks deliver the mud to the site the entire
tank is emptied and a portion of the tank is solids, the solids are the soils that were
removed with the water. One of the soil piles from the mud truck was also analyzed
separately.
