URS Operating Services. Inc.
START.EPA Region Vlll SAR for ESUClimax
Contract No. 68-W5-0031 Revision: I
Date: 11/1996
FISH TISSUE SAMPLES
Fish tissue samples were collected with the assistance of the Colorado Division of Wildlife. Toby
Morning.of the Colorado Division of Wildlife used a backpack style stream shocking unit on the pool
immediately downgradient of the CM National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) point.
Two brown trout fry less than three inches long), two brown trout (eight and ten inches), and one rainbow
trout (ten inches) were netted.
The ten inch Brown trout(CMCX-BR-1)and the ten inch Rainbow trout(CMCX=RB-1)were immediately
filleted into eight portions of approximately equal size. UOS and Woodward Clyde alternated collection
on the right and left sides, thus reducing the potential for any variation in metals concentrations on the
right and left sides of the respective fish.
QUALITY ASSURANCE SAMPLES
Three quality control samples were collected during the expanded SI.. One rinsate sample (CMCX-SW-
T30) was collected from the sediment sampling equipment. Two duplicate samples were also collected.
Sample CMCX-SW-T23 was collected with surface water sample CMCX-SW-T13. Sample CMCX-SW-
B26 was collected with surface water sample CMCX-SW-B6. Aqueous matrix spike/matrix spike
duplicate (MS/MSD) volumes were collected at sampling locations CMCX-SW-T13 and CMC-SW-B6.
The soil MS/MSD volume was collected at sampling location CMCX-SE-T13.
FIELD OBSERVATIONS
All sample locations were marked with an Ashtec Global Positioning System (GPS) to locate the latitude
and longitude within a one-to-ten centimeter accuracy. The latitude and longitude of all sample locations
are included in Tables 2, 3, and 4. A scaled map with geographic features and sampling locations is
shown on Figure 1, Sample Location Map.
Stream flow measurements were made at sample locations CMCX-SW-T13,CMCX-SW-TI 1,CMCX-SW-
T10, CMCX-SW-T6, and CMCX-SW-T4. Stream flows were measured whenever a substantial tributary
had entered the Tenmile Creek channel upgradient of any sample location. Stream flows were not
measured at background sample locations due to heavy ice pack in the stream channels.
CM officials were extremely cooperative in showing UOS sampling personnel around the site. Site access
to sampling locations was expedited by CM recommendations and considerations for health and safety
issues. The entire facility was made available for inspection and observation.
75-51119.00
\Stan\Cli max\.SAR\.SA R.Txrmhrbas
