INTRODUCTION
Weed and vegetation surveys conducted on the Seneca Coal Co. property have revealed
many weed species. The management of these species will vary according to level of
infestation and sensitivity of surrounding vegetation. Seneca plans to use an integrated
approach to weed control on property owned in Routt County, Colorado. Management
will include prevention, chemical control, mechanical and biological controls.
WEED INVENTORY
The list of plants classified as weeds are listed in the Colorado Noxious Weed Act, 33-
5.5 -101 to 119, CRS 2003. The noxious weeds are listed according to "A ", `B ", and "C ".
No "A" List species have been observed on Seneca property. Continued annual
monitoring will be conducted to insure that no "A" list plants go undetected. Several
species from the `B" and "C" lists have been identified on Seneca property and some
species of concern not listed on either "A ", "B" or "C ". The following weed species have
been identified through previous vegetation studies and field observation to exist on
Seneca Coal Co. property:
Black henbane
Bull thistle
Canada thistle
Common cocklebur
Common mullein
Curly cup gum weed
Curly dock
Dalamtion toadflax
Downy brome, (cheatgrass)
Field bindweed
Hounds tongue
Japanese brome
Kochia
Leafy spurge
Perennial pepperweed
Russian olive
Scotch thistle
Tamerisk
Whitetop, Hoary Cress
Yellow toadflax
WEED CONTROL MEASURES
The above species will be monitored and controlled by the methods presented below.
Prevention
1. Prevent new noxious weeds from becoming established by stopping seed
production. Mechanical, chemical, or biological control is necessary prior to seed
set.
2. Wash and clean all vehicles on the site to prevent accidental transport of noxious
weed seed. Wash and clean all farm equipment and herbicide equipment before
moving to any new sites. Cleaning sites are designated at each mine site, Seneca
II, Yoast, and 2 -W facilities areas.
3. Plant only certified weed -free seed.
MR -68 1 Revised 05110
