PLATTE SAND & GRAVEL, LLC
S&H MINE
PAGE 1
Spill Prevention and Countermeasures plan
The S&H Mine refueling area contains storage of the follow-
ing petroleum products and related equipment fluids. This plan
outlines the secondary containment control features associate
with the fluids maintained on the mine site. It also outlined
what counter measures are implemented should there be a spill
within the secondary containment structures and how minor spills
outside the containment structures is handled.
Fluids present
Description Maximum Quantity
Offroad Diesel 10,000 gal
Motor Oil 100 gal
Anti Freeze 100 gal
Waste oil 100 gal
empty 55 gal oil barrels 10 ±
Secondary Containment
The fuel is contained in a 10,000 gal double wall tank, sur-
rounded by a concrete bunker with a capacity of 24,300 gallons of
fluids or 140% of the largest container within the containment
walls plus the foot print of the tank stored in the containment
area. The walls and floor of the bunker were poured as one solid
piece of concrete so it can not leak. Any spill within the
bunker is pumped out and disposed of as needed. Stormwater
accumulates in the bunker and either evaporates or is cleaned as
needed. The water is disposed of at an approved treatment
facility if it is found to be contaminated with fuel oil. The
spilled fuel oil is collected by a oil recycling service when
they pick up the used motor oil.
The remaining petroleum products are kept in a covered shed
that has a floor grate over a spill containment chamber. The
containment chamber has a volume of 448.8 gallons. This chamber
is sealed and has a drain spigot so any spilled fluid can be
removed and disposed of. The shed was placed with the front or
open end elevated to keep spilled fluids from leaving the build-
ing. The chamber is checked weekly and cleaned as needed. The
maximum volume a single container of fluids stored within this
shed is the 100 gallon waste oil container. All spilled or waste
oil is collected by a recycled oil service and removed to their
processing facility.
Countermeasures
The fuel and bulk oil storage facility is located within
the mined area approximately 2700 feet from the closest road and
the mine is locked when there are no personnel at the mine.
There are adequate quantities of absorbent sand on the mine to
contain any spills that occur outside the containment structures.
If minor spill occur during equipment maintenance or refueling
sand is placed on the spill immediately absorb it and contain it
to the immediate area. The contaminated material from these
minor spills are collected in a barrel and will be disposed at an
approved facility.
