C horizon <br />Hue: 5YR or 7.5YR <br />Value: 5 to 8 dry, 5 or 6 moist <br />Chroma: 4 through 6 dry and moist <br />Fine earth fraction: sandy clay loam, loam, sandy loam or clay loam <br />COMPETING SERIES: There are no competitors in the present classification. Former competitors in <br />the previous classification (Lithic Ustollic) are the Berto, Bondman, Frontier, and Kech series. Berto soils <br />have calcic horizons. Bondman soils have soil temperatures ranging from 47 to 50 degrees F, and <br />receive more winter moisture. Frontier and Kech soils have horizons with segregated secondary <br />carbonates. In addition, Frontier soils have hue yellower than 7.5YR in the argillic horizon. <br />GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Bond soils are on cuestas, mesas, hills, and ridges with slopes ranging from <br />0 to 50 percent. They formed in alluvial and eolian deposits from sandstone. Elevations are 5,600 to <br />7,000 feet. Typically, the average annual precipitation is 10 to 13 inches, but ranges to 15 inches in <br />some areas; mean annual temperature is 49 to 54 degrees F. The frost -free period is 110 to 160 days. <br />In Colorado, the temperature ranges as low as 43 degrees F. In Arizona elevations are as low as 4500 <br />feet, temperatures as high 55 degrees and frost free as long as 165 days. <br />GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Aparejo, Hagerman, Penistaja and <br />Skyvillage soils. Aparejo and Penistaja soils are deep. Hagerman soils have lithic contact between 20 <br />and 40 inches. Skyvillage soils do not have argillic horizons. <br />DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium runoff; moderately permeable. <br />USE AND VEGETATION: The major use of this soil is for livestock grazing. The present vegetation is <br />blue grama, sideoats grama, New Mexico feathergrass, Indian ricegrass, scattered oneseed juniper, <br />and winterfat. <br />DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: West - central New Mexico, Northern Arizona, southwestern Colorado <br />and southern Utah.
