Binns, Janet
From: savageandsavage@earthlink.net RE-CMVED
Sent: Tuesday, August 10, 2010 10:12 AM
To: Binns, Janet AUG 12 2010
Subject: Keenesburg 2010 Vegetation Sampling Plan
Dv*0011 on"ttec?ae tdon,
Uning and SahAy
Hi Janet,
Don, Dan, and I have been looking at the vegetation at the mine and have developed the following proposed vegetation
sampling plan for 2010. Would you review the plan and e-mail us a concurrence (or questions or suggested
modifications)?
Keenesburg Mine
2010 Phase III Final Bond Release Sampling Year 2 (this is the same sampling plan as last year)
1998 Reclamation Areas (Areas 2, 7, 10, 15, 16)
• Total Vegetation Cover (by species) to sample adequacy with a minimum of 15 samples
• Total Herbaceous Production to sample adequacy with a minimum of 15 samples
• Species composition calculated from cover data
• Proportional representation of areas by acreage
1999 Reclamation Areas (Areas 5, 9)
• Total Vegetation Cover (by species) to sample adequacy with a minimum of 15 samples
• Total Herbaceous Production to sample adequacy with a minimum of 15 samples
• Species composition calculated from cover data
• Proportional representation of areas by acreage
2000 Reclamation Areas (Areas 6,19)
• Total Vegetation Cover (by species) to sample adequacy with a minimum of 15 samples
• Total Herbaceous Production to sample adequacy with a minimum of 15 samples
• Species composition calculated from cover data
• Proportional representation of areas by acreage
Monitoring in Area 30
• Total Vegetation Cover (by species) with 10 samples
• Total Herbaceous Production with 15 samples
• Species composition calculated from cover data
The sample methods will be the same as we have used in the past, an optical point frame for cover with 25 meter
transects and data points taken each meter on opposite sides of the transect. Total herbaceous production will be by the
harvest method using 0.5 square meter plots. All transects and plots are randomly located within the reclamation areas.
We are proposing not to monitor/sample Area 25 this year. While it looks like there are some more perennial grasses
around the edges of Area 25, the vast majority of the parcel is cheatgrass. Dan has mowed the parcel to try and reduce
annual growth, however there has been no significant change is species composition so far this growing season.
