I am one of the owners of Family Market, the
grocery store in Naturita, Colorado. It was brought to my attention this
morning that Western Fuels' permit to mine coal in Nucla may not be
renewed. I find this to be very disturbing. I grew up in Uravan and have
seen first hand the devastation closing the mines and mill had on our
town and its residents.
Western Fuels and its employees are our customers. I would guess that
Western Fuels is probably the second largest employer in our area. It
would be devastating for us to lose them. You only have to drive down
our main street to see that we CAN NOT afford to lose any more jobs.
Over half the businesses in Naturita are closed now. If we lose more
jobs, Naturita and Nucla may become ghost towns as Uravan did.
My parents lived on BB Road in Nucla for years, in close proximity to
the mine in question. They always found Western Fuels to be a
wonderful neighbor. A huge part of their lives was enjoying the
abundant wildlife that frequents the property that has been reclaimed
by Western Fuels. It is our opinion that the quality of the restoration
done by Western Fuels can not be questioned in the least.
I personally know the person that has caused this renewal to be in
question. I don't have a negative opinion of her. I do think that her
reputation and controversial past should be way more in question than
the way Western Fuels conducts their operation..
