PERMIT #: M-2006-060
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: PSH
INSPECTION DATE: July 20, 2010
OBSERVATIONS
The BLM West Gravel Pit, File No. M-2006-060, was inspected by Peter Hays with the Division of
Reclamation, Mining and Safety (Division) as part of the Division's monitoring inspection program. Mr. Andy
Norris with Jackson County Road and Bridge was on site during the inspection.
The BLM West Gravel Pit is located 9 mile south of Walden, Colorado in Jackson County. The pit was last
inspected by the Division on August 9, 2006 as a pre-operational inspection.
The first phase boundary markers and fence were GPS surveyed with a Trimble Geo XT by the Division. A
map indicating the result of the GPS survey is attached.
The following are general and itemized observations from the Division's inspection.
(MP) Gen. Compliance With Mine Plan:
The BLM West Gravel Pit is an active 112c sand and gravel operation, permitted for 83 acres of disturbance.
The permit was issued by the Division on December 19, 2006. The site was last mined in 2008 according to
Mr. Norris. A large stockpile of material was located in the north end of the first phase of the site. Mining and
processing of material is not expected to occur for another 3-4 years. The stockpiled material is used as needed
for the county roads in the area. The mining disturbance at the site consisted of an eight foot deep excavation in
the middle of the first phase. Mining is occurring from north to south. Mining will continue north after the first
phase is complete. No water was observed in the pit floor. No fuel was stored on site. The required 100 foot
offset from the power lines was observed during the inspection.
(RS) Reclamation Success:
The approved post mine land use is rangeland. No reclamation activities have occurred at the site. A well-
vegetated stockpile of topsoil was located along the eastern fence line. All available topsoil has been removed
from the first phase. No noxious weeds or evidence of erosion were observed during the inspection.
(SMSigns and Markers:
An entrance sign was posted and permit boundary markers were observed as required by Rule 3.1.12.
No problems were noted during the inspection.
Inspection Contact Address
Andy Norris
Jackson County Road and Bridge
188 Grant St.
P.O.
