2010 <br />WILLIAMS PIT <br />Gravel Pit <br />Section IV <br />Climate & Elevation <br />Climatic Features <br />The climate is semi-arid with annual precipitation averaging 10-16 inches with 50-75% <br />of the precipitation falling between March and September. Mostly snow in March, April <br />and May. The remainder of the precipitation occurs in the form of showers and intense <br />rain events. <br />The optimum growing season for native plants is early spring and summer. The frost- <br />free period ranges from 147-162 days. Plant Growth can begin anytime from March 15 <br />to May 1. First killing frost average date is October 10 but can occur as early as <br />September 1. Temperatures range from 105 to 35 below zero farenheit. July is the <br />warmest month and January is the coldest month. <br />The area commonly has high intensity thunderstorms typically from June thru August. <br />Average wind speeds are 6-7 miles per hour and the most intense wind period is in the <br />spring months.
