Environmental Protection Plan, Schwartzwalder Mine 19-1
• 19. TAILINGS AND SLUDGE DISPOSAL
No tailings were disposed on the Schwartwalder Mine property. Ore from the Schwartzwalder Mine was
hauled to the Canon City mill for processing.
The original water treatment plant included drying trenches (settling or evaporation ponds), in which
barium chloride was used to precipitate radium. Sludge that accumulated in the drying trenches was
mucked out, mixed with ore, and taken to the Canon City mill for processing. A small quantity of sludge
from the sediment ponds was disposed on the east waste rock dump, prior to reclamation, and capped in
accordance with the mine reclamation plan (Cotter, 1983). Sampling of soils around and below the drying
trenches was conducted during reclamation, and the results met applicable cleanup criteria. Confirmation
sampling was conducted in September 2008, and included verification samples and monitoring using field
instruments The sampling confirmed that soils in the area of the drying trenches met applicable standards.
No other sludge disposal is known to have occurred on the property.
F- r -I
LJ
r?
LJ
4109C.100731 Whetstone Associates 6
