SECTION 3100 00
EARTHWORK
General
Installation shall be conducted in a skillful and workmanlike manner. Caution shall be exercised in backfiIl and
compaction around structures or conduits to prevent damage, movement or deflection. A consistent homogeneous
fill is necessary. The installation shall be performed with proper moisture content and with adequate mixing of
the soil materials to accomplish this.
Construction operations shall be carried out in such a manner and sequence to minimize erosion, air and water
pollution. The completed job shall present a workmanlike appearance and shall conform to the line, grades, and
- -- elevation shown on the drawings or as staked in the field. All operations shall be carried out in a safe and skiIlfid
manner. Safety and health regulations shall be observed and appropriate safety measures shall be used.
Earth Engineering Consultants, Inc. (EEC) performed an on -site geotechnical investigation. As part of their final
report (Project No. 1092026), site - specific recommendations are made. Those recommendations are
complimented here as applicable.
EMBANKMENT CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATION
1. Scope
This specification is for earthen embankment of the Colorado Beef Reservoir in Prowers County, Colorado. This
specification is intended for construction and inspection methods for the construction of the embankment with on-
site earthen materials to insure stability of the embankment structure. Site specific geotechnical testing will be
required of a qualified geotechnical engineering firm to provide the field testing values (density and moisture
readings) for the installation of the embanlanent material.
2. Foundation Preparation and Excavation
The footprint of the reservoir embankment shall be stripped a minimum of 12 inches to remove vegetation and
organic matter and then scarified and wetted to create a foundation for the berm and preparation for the first lift of
fill material. All strippings shall be stockpiled in locations as shown on the Earthwork Construction Plans
(Enviro -Ag Engineering, Inc.).
Weathered claystone bedrock may be encountered along the northeastern interior slopes and bottom of the
reservoir (included in boring logs in the EEC report). The material may be suitable for ripping so that subgrade
elevations can be achieved. If the bedrock is encountered prior to achieving the correct subgrade elevation, the
bedrocks shall be over - excavated such that a six -to -nine inch thick soil foundation can be installed. This
foundation shall be prepared prior to placement of the liner. This foundation layer- shall consist of soils in the area
of excavation and shall be compacted to 95% of Standard Proctor at optimum moisture ( -1 to +3 %). The
Geotechnician shall document that the soil foundation has been constructed to the specified thickness and has
achieved the specified density and moisture control prior to placement of the liner material. This information
shall be included in the Geotechnician's final report.
329000-1
