The Seneca 2 -W Mine is located about 2.4 km (1.5 <br />mi) west of the proposed Yoast Mine. Impacts <br />associated with the Seneca 2 -W Mine included: <br />- Disturbance of 392.5 ha (970 ac) from mining <br />operations. <br />- An increase in groundwater total dissolved <br />solids concentrations. <br />- Continued employment for about 44 people at <br />the mine. <br />Bureau of Land Management, 1983. Environmental Impact <br />Statement, Round Two, Green River -Hams Fork Coal Region. <br />This document analyzed the impacts of leasing 24 <br />Federal lease tracts in southern Wyoming and <br />northwest Colorado. Expected impacts resulting <br />from development of the proposed lease tracts were <br />compared to the baseline impacts associated with <br />current mining operations in the region. <br />The following impacts were associated with <br />development of the 24 tracts: 1) increased salinity <br />in the Green and Colorado Rivers, 2) loss of big <br />game winter habitat, 3) loss of riparian habitat, <br />4) local decreases in surface water quality, and 5) <br />local decreases in groundwater quality.. <br />Bureau of Land Management, 1995. Environmental <br />Assessment #CO- 016 -93 -031, Coal Lease Modification, <br />Lease C- 0114093. <br />This document analyzed the impacts associated with <br />adding an additional 160 acres to coal lease <br />C- 0114093. The only notable impact identified with <br />this lease modification was the possible loss of <br />fragile soils in portions of the lease modification <br />area. Mitigation was included in the EA to require <br />the lessee to document how fragile soils would be <br />protected, and how water sources would be protected <br />from sedimentation. In their permit application, <br />Seneca does not propose any disturbance on any of <br />the identified fragile soils. <br />The documents listed above have been reviewed and are <br />incorporated by reference into this environmental <br />assessment. <br />3 <br />
