3. Modifications that impact the movement and quality of groundwater that is
tributary to Eagle Park Reservoir.
The ditches and water collection and conveyance facilities listed above and the watershed
that drains to Eagle Park Reservoir replenish alluvial aquifers that also supply this reservoir.
Expansion of the open pit mine, overburden storage facilities, tailings ponds, and Robinson Lake
could affect groundwater conditions. In addition, hazardous chemicals used in mining operations
could contaminate groundwater and surface water. Conditions should be included in the permit
to prevent adverse impact to these resources.
In summary, Eagle Park Reservoir and its supply sources are extensively intertwined with
the Climax Mine operation. The proposed amendment requests permission to restart major
mining operations that could have a significant adverse impact on water supply and water
quality. As you know, the amendment is presented in a voluminous filing that exceeds 500
pages. We cannot be certain about every potential impact of the proposed changes from what
has been filed. Our request is for party status in all further proceedings for this permit. Our goal
is to craft permit conditions that will protect the water supply and water quality of Eagle Park
Reservoir.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment. I will be the point of contact for the
Reservoir Company for communication related to the permit application and can be reached at
the telephone number and mailing address on this letterhead.
