West Elk Mine 2009 Annual Hydrology Report 2
30-year (1971-2000) total annual precipitation values recorded at Paonia 1SW (15.07 inches),
Overland Reservoir (30.77 inches), and McClure Pass (35.25 inches), respectively (CCC, 2010;
NRCS, 2010b; WRCC, 2010).
•
•
The snow water equivalent (SWE), a measure of the amount of water in the snow pack,
was derived from Snotel data recorded at Overland Reservoir and McClure Pass stations (NRCS
SNOTEL, 2010c). Historical SWE data for Overland Reservoir are available beginning in WY
1990 and for McClure Pass beginning in WY 1981. A summary of the average monthly SWE data
is graphically shown in Figures 4 and 5. In WY 2009 the annual average SWE at Overland
Reservoir was 4.84 inches and 5.82 inches at McClure Pass compared to the historical annual SWE
averages (WY 1990-WY 2008), 4.13 inches and 5.44 inches, respectively. These SWE values
correspond to 117% of the historical annual average SWE for Overland Reservoir and 107% for
McClure Pass.
Figure 1.
