Revegetation
Vegetation on the reclaimed area has enjoyed excellent conditions so far this season. All
areas show good signs of vegetation establishment and runoff from snowmelt and rainfall
seems reduced, likely due to better hydrologic cover on the reclaimed area. Hydro-seeded
steep slope areas are responding well and minimal rills and gullies were noted. Older rills
and gullies are showing signs of healing due to reduced runoff and better ground cover.
Houndstongue, thistle, and diffuse knapweed were again observed on the reclaimed area.
The thistle and houndstongue were especially numerous on the topsoil borrow area in Jeff
Canyon. Knapweed was present in the traditional areas on the east-facing slope of the west
side of the disturbed area and the lower north-facing slope of the center knob. Knapweed
was also found within the shrub enclosure, located near the center of the fenced area. The
operator should immediately begin weed control efforts before these weeds flower and set
seeds.
Overall, the site appeared in excellent condition for the early summer season. With normal
summer moisture, reclamation efforts appear to be successful.
4
