III. COMMENTS - COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made during the
inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection and the facts or
evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Janet Binns of Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and
Safety. The inspector met Mr. George Patterson near the gate. He was leaving the site as the inspector was
arriving. The weather was warm and dry. Thick smoke from a wildfire was visible west of Canon City(miles
away from the mine site).
Roads: The access road and haul road to the refuse disposal area were dry and in good condition.
Hydrologic Balance: Ponds 4 and 5 were dry. The discharge structures appeared to be in good repair. No
noxious weeds were observed on either pond embankment. Embankments were vegetated and stable.
George stated that he had collected ground water samples on 6/21. He was on his way to ice them and ship
them to the ACZ lab in Steamboat that afternoon.
Revegetation: Reclaimed area vegetation is actively growing and looking healthy. There was no sign of
noxious weeds becoming established on the reclaimed areas. Gullies were not apparent on the reclaimed
slopes. The reclaimed areas of the mine were in good condition. Vegetative diversity appears to be good.
Processing Waste: Vegetation is well established on the refuse disposal area(RDA). No noxious weeds were
observed on the RDS. No gullies were noted on the RDA, and what few rills were present were small and had
stabilized. No problems were observed on the RDA.
Reclamation success: George confirmed that a contractor will be conducting interim sampling on the
reclaimed areas this summer in accordance with the permit commitment.
3 of 4 WHITE-File YELLOW-Operator PINK-Specialist
