types on site and characteristically has a more open, highly productive understory during the
growing season.
During the winter, common understory species were buried by snow which resulted in the stands
being very open with very little in the way of exposed understory shrubs - see picture 2. Shrubs
that did occur in the aspen stands were gambel oak and serviceberry. During winter months
wildlife activity in this habitat type is low throughout the project area. This would even be true
during winters when snow cover is not as deep.
The only continuous stands of the Spruce/Fir Vegetation Community are found along the Deep
Creek drainage. There are some small pockets along the Dry Fork of Minnesota Creek and Lick
Creek drainages. There are also some very small isolated pockets in other areas and pockets
interspersed with Spruce/Fir stands. Elevations nominally range from 6,800 to 8,000+ feet.
Picture 3 - Spruce-fir community
7
