0 1.0 Introduction
Barr Engineering Company (Barr) has completed the delineation and mapping of wetlands in an
unnamed gulch ( "Project Area ") in accordance with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wetlands
Delineation Manual (1987 Edition) and the Interim Regional Supplement to the Corps of Engineers
Wetland Delineation Manual: Western Mountains, Valleys, and Coast Region (2008). The project
area is located within the eastern half of Section 15, Township 13S, Range 90W, near the
unincorporated town of Somerset, on the western border of Gunnison County, Colorado. The project
area, known as the "Refuse Pile Expansion East" is owned by Mountain Coal Company, LLC, as part
of their West Elk: Mine. A location map is provided in Figure 1. The project area is approximately
241 acres and is bounded to the north by State Highway 133 and the North Fork of the Gunnison
River, Box Canyon and Gunnison National Forest to the east, Gunnison National Forest to the south,
Sylvester Gulch and Mountain Coal Company West Elk Mine facilities to the west. Figure 2 provides
aerial photography that covers the entire Refuse Pile Expansion East project area. Barr Engineering
identified and delineated three wetlands onsite. Details of the delineation methodology and wetland
descriptions are reflected in later sections of this report. The wetland boundaries have been included
in most figures to provide context of their location in the landscape relative to environmental features
of interest, such as topography, soils, and vegetation.
•
2
