The 36 inch steel pipeline will be replaced with a 36 inch diameter HDPE pipeline in a new trench
10 feet south of the existing pipeline. This project is scheduled to begin as soon as Division of
Reclamation, Mining and Safety accepts this project and will last for approximately 4-5 months.
The existing pipeline is an Environmental Protection Facility per Mineral Rules and Regulations of the
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board for Hard Rock, Metal and Designated Mining Operations
(Rules), as described in the Henderson Mine and Mill Environmental Protection Plan submitted as
Technical Revision #4 (TR-04) to Permit M-1977-342.
CMC requests acceptance from the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety to move forward with this
project to assure the lasting integrity of the mill water return pipeline. A project summary report, as-built
drawings and project certification will be provided to the DRMS upon project completion.
Project details are included below and shown in Attachment 1.
CMC will obtain all required permits from the Grand County Department of Transportation, and coordinate
with utility companies as appropriate during the project. The trench for the new pipeline will be excavated
to a depth to allow for a minimum of 6 feet of cover to the top of pipe in most areas and 9 feet at the Ute
Pass Road crossing. The trench will be excavated to a minimum of 72 inches wide to allow for
embedment and compaction and will follow designated grades. A 6 inch bedding foundation will be
placed in the trench using materials that meet base material specifications. Bedding materials will be
tamped with a mechanical tamper to 95% Standard Proctor density.
All pipe and fittings will be inspected prior to assembly and damaged material will not be used. Fusing
will be conducted by certified personnel.
The pipe will be carefully placed in the trench to prevent damage and will be chocked to prevent
movement prior to backfilling. A tracing wire will be installed on top of pipe for future pipe location. The
temperature, pressure and timing for each fusion joint will be recorded by the contractor using an
electronic data logger. CMC personnel will perform a visual inspection of all pipe joints. Any joints that
