As part of this permit revision, the Bowie No. 1 Mine permit boundary will transfer to the
Bowie No. 2 Mine permit boundary 2,379 acres, 2,047 acres of private surface, and 332
acres of Federal surface. In addition, the Bowie No.1 and No.2 mines will control
different portions of Federal coal Leases, C-37210, C-27432 and D-36955.
Before Permit Revision No. 4, the Bowie No. 1 Mine permit boundary included 8,670
acres; 6,752 acres of private surface, and 1,918 acres of Federal surface. The permit
contained 200 acres of privately owned coal and the remaining 8,502 acres was
Federally owned.
Included in the original 8,670 permit acres are 960 acres that were outside of the
Federal Coal Lease boundaries. The permit boundary was revised to follow the
Federal Coal Lease boundaries thus reducing the Bowie No. 1 mine permit boundary by
960 acres through this action alone.
There are no private minerals that are part of the permit transfer. Federal minerals
encompass 100% of the 2,379 acres to be transferred.
After this revision, Bowie No. 1 permit will contain 5,331 acres, 1,586 acres of federal
surface, and 4,705 private surface. There are 200 acres of privately owned coal and
the remaining 5131 acres are Federally owned.
A copy of the proposed revision is available for public inspection at the Paonia Public
Library, 2 Third Street, Paonia, CO, and at the offices of the Division of Reclamation,
Mining & Safety, 1313 Sherman St., Room 215, Denver, CO, 80203, (303) 866-3567.
Written comments, objections or a request for an informal conference on the proposed
permit revision may be submitted to and additional information obtained from the
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety, 1313 Sherman St., Room 215, Denver, CO
80203, phone (303) 866-3567.
