40 Another important aspect of the topsoil management at Trapper is ensuring that the proper quality of <br />topsoil is used for reclaiming croplands. As described in Section 2.6, soils found within Trapper Mine's <br />proposed permit area vary in depth, texture, quantity and quality. For these reasons, only certain soils <br />(Artdic Haploboroll, Brycan, Cochetopa, Evanston shallow Variant, Forelle, Savage and Splitro) may be <br />used for reclaiming croplands. Soils may therefore be selectively placed on cropland areas emphasizing <br />the use of these eight soils . Soils considered not suitable for use on cropland because of coarse texture <br />may be mixed with farmland soil in some instances (refer to Section 3.6.3.2). <br />Monitoring of soil removal and replacement is the key to a successful topsoil program because it provides <br />the control needed to ensure the removal of required soil quantities and a stable, uniform depth of soil <br />upon replacement. Both the yards of topsoil stockpiled and the total area of disturbance will be monitored <br />to annually evaluate the topsoil balance status. Details concerning a surplus topsoil abandonment plan, <br />approved with MR-155 in 1997, are given in Appendix G, Section VII. <br />Adequate monitoring is provided during soil salvage and subsequent replacement. Soil moving equip- <br />ment is monitored and supervised from soil salvage through replacement to ensure adequate topsoil <br />quality and quantity are obtained. Also, probing after replacement ensures proper and uniform topsoil <br />depth.
