road segments along with the sediment pond and associated drainage
structures.
Soil sampling will be conducted after topsoil redistribution and prior to
seeding and planting activities. Sampling will determine the suitability
of cover materials to provide an adequate vegetative growth medium
and to identify any deficiencies in necessary soil nutrients.
Representative samples will be taken to a depth of 4 feet at a spacing
of approximately 500 feet. Layers of observed soil types will be
sampled and bagged separately, and no sampled interval will exceed 1
foot of thickness. All samples will be submitted to a laboratory and
analyzed for the same parameters utilized during the baseline soil
sampling.
Any areas indicating suitability concerns as a result of the sampling
program will be corrected prior to seeding and planting. Depending on
the suitability issue, Northfield will either remove the unsuitable
material, add soil amendments to correct the condition, or place a cap
of suitable material with an adequate thickness, as appropriate. The revegetation
plan describes proposed methods and practices involved in
reestablishing self- sustaining vegetation to support the postmining
land use of rangeland. Vegetation on reclaimed areas will ultimately
provide soil stabilization and erosion control, and provide habitat for
wildlife and limited numbers of domestic animals.
Reve eq tation Schedule
Local climatic conditions favor seeding and planting in middle to late
fall. Northfield will plan to perform revegetation activities on re-
topsoiled areas during this period to take advantage of moisture
available from snowpack and runoff during the spring. Exceptions to
seeding during the fall period may occur when revegetation of
disturbed areas cannot be delayed due to the immediate potential for
significant erosion. The disturbed areas subject to these factors will
generally be limited in size. These areas may include, but are not
limited to, newly constructed ditch corridors and topsoil piles, pond
embankments, and road cuts. In order to prevent significant erosion,
these areas may be revegetated at times other than the fall planting
period.
2.05.4 -8 Revised 5/01/07
