exception of the south clean water diversion ditch, are temporary and
will be reclaimed by the end of the reclamation liability period. The
schedule of ditch removal will depend on the time required to
successfully establish vegetation and any unforeseen needs to control
erosion on reclaimed areas.
Topsoil
Topsoil material will be recovered from all proposed mine disturbance
areas and stockpiled for use during reclamation activities. Topsoil
storage practices were previously discussed in this section under
Topsoil Stockpiles. The proposed topsoil handling procedures discussed
in this section apply to the main mine facility area, adjacent roads, and
the ventilation shaft areas.
Areas to be disturbed for the proposed mine facilities encompass
gently sloping terrain within the bottom of the valley formed by
Chandler Creek. These areas have not, for the most part, been
previously disturbed. Previously disturbed areas that exist in and
adjacent to planned facility areas include an abandoned railroad bed
immediately adjacent to the south bank of Chandler Creek, a ranch
road adjacent to the north and west sides of the main facility area, a
small abandoned irrigation ditch parallel to and along the west side of
the ranch road, and the right -of -way corridor for County Road 79.
These previously disturbed areas are depicted on Map 12.
Northfield conducted soil sampling activities in the planned facility area
in order to determine the horizons suitable for salvage. A discussion of
the description, sampling, and analysis of soil horizons for the area is
presented in Section 2.04.9, Soils Resources Information. Based on
the field sampling results, Northfield has determined that suitable
topsoil materials can be recovered to a depth averaging ten (10)
inches in the proposed facilities and ancillary areas. Areas subject to
topsoil removal include the main facilities area, haul road, ventilation
shaft sites and access road, and north light use road. The estimated
area of surface disturbance for these areas, and associated volume of
recoverable topsoil, is provided in Section 2.05.4 of the permit
application.
Northfield plans to place all topsoil in two topsoil stockpiles constructed
adjacent to the facilities and ventilation shaft areas during the initial
construction of these sites. Following initial construction of this and any
other topsoil stockpiles, Northfield will install appropriate topsoil
marker signs identifying the topsoil materials in accordance with Rule
4.02. All proposed stockpile locations are shown on Map 12.
2.05.3 -27 Revised 12/04/09, TR -01
