(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-1991-076
INSPECTION DATE: 5/20/2009
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS THM
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was conducted as part of the normal program established by the Colorado Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety. The Mule Farm Gravel Pit is an 89 acre 112c gravel mine located 1 mile south of Grand
Junction, Colorado off of Mesa County Road 26.38. Gayle Lyman with Elam Construction, Inc. accompanied the
inspector during the inspection.
The purpose of the inspection was to observe the repairs made after the 2005 flooding incident when the Gunnison
River entered the pit during run off. The water from the Gunnison entered the pit from the downgradient/west side
of the pit. The site appeared to be stable and the repairs made to the site are consistent with the proposed/described
changes in the technical revision submitted by the operator on May 17, 2010. The technical revision is currently
under review by surface hydrological staff in the DRMS Denver Office.
The topsoil stockpile slopes were steeper than the required 3H:1 V. This is seen as a problem due to the appearance
of the stockpiles being located at their location for more than 1 year. The stockpiles need to be configured with
slopes no steeper than 3H:1 V in order to be considered stable. Please re-configure the stockpiles to have slopes no
steeper than 3H:1 V and supply photo-documentation to this office no later than July 12, 2010.
Tamarisk and Russian Olive were observed within the permit boundary during the inspection. Both noxious weeds
are included in the approved weed management plan and therefore this is not seen as a problem. The presence of
noxious weeds is noted for future monitoring of weed management plan success during future inspections.
Photos that show the conditions observed during the May 20, 2010 inspection are included at the end of this report.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Travis Marshall at the Division of Reclamation, Mining
and Safety, Grand Junction Field Office, 101 South 3rd Street, Room 301, Grand Junction, Colorado 81501, phone
no. 970-241-2042.
I & E Contact Address cc:
NAME: Gayle Lyman
OPERATOR: Elam Construction, Inc.
STREET: 556 Struthers Avenue
CITY/STATE/ZIP: Grand Junction, CO 81501
?
