MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-1977-A8.5
INSPECTION DATE: line 2, gnin INSPECTORS INITIALS: 11F
OBSERVATIONS.
This was a monitoring inspection of the Gravel Pit No. 8 operation; DRMS file No. M-1977-485, operated by
Baca County. This site is located approximately 18.5 miles south of Pritchett, Colorado in Baca County. I,
Jared Ebert of the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety conducted the inspection. Mr.
Clarence Stevenson of Baca County accompanied me on the inspection.
This is a 160 acre 112c mining operation. The primary affected area is located in the northwestern corner of
the permit boundary. The total affected land was estimated to be about 18 acres based on the site
observations and a 2009 aerial photograph of the area. At this time, the Operator is only allowed to affected
20 acres of land at a time. Prior to affected additional land beyond the allowed 20 acres, the Operator will
need to reclaim portions of the affected land that will no longer be impacted by the mining operation, or
submit a Technical Revision to the current approved mining plan to increase the amount of affected land that
can occur at any one time during the mining operation.
The pit excavation is about 20 to 25 feet deep. The excavation is oval shaped with gentle pit slopes. The
Operator is excavating material at a 3:1 horizontal to vertical ratio slope. The operation is slowly advancing to
the south and to the east. A haul road runs from the entrance of the mine site to the base of the pit where
the mined material is stockpiled. Topsoil has been salvaged in advance of the excavation and placed in berms
adjacent to the pit slopes.
There is a pre-law excavation located at the northern end of the affected land. The slopes of this excavation
vary from fairly steep 1:1 slopes to gentle 3:1 slopes. Native grasses and shrubs and trees have established in
this area. Overall, the area is stable with only minor erosion gullies present.
Figure 2.) From the western end of the affected land
looking east into the pit excavation.
Figure 1.)
