MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-9006-094
INSPECTION DATE: h ina 1st 9n1n INSPECTORS INITIALS: 11 F
OBSERVATIONS
This was a monitoring inspection of the Carrizo Stone South site, DRMS File No. M-2006-024 operated by
Carrizo Stone, LLC. This site is located approximately 22 miles south of Pritchett, Colorado in Baca County.
Jared Ebert of the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety conducted the inspection. Mr. Ray
Sikes of Carrizo Stone, LLC. accompanied me on the inspection.
This is a 9.9 acre 110c mining operation. The permit boundary and affected area was mapped using a Trimble
GPS unit and a 2009 aerial photograph. This map is enclosed with this report. The affected land was
measured to be approximately 5.35 acres. The affected land contains a quarry area, various waste rock
stockpiles, a topsoil stockpile, pallets of various sized sandstone products and a processing area where the
sandstone saw is located. The quarry is located in the northwestern portion of the affected land. A 5-10 foot
highwall runs north to south daylighting to the northwest. Waste rock stockpiles are located adjacent to the
quarry area on all sides, and some piles are located in the northeastern portion of the affected land.
The permit boundary was marked with metal posts. These posts were mapped and found to delineate an area
of 8.26 acres which is smaller than the currently approved 9.9 acres. It appears the northern permit boundary
markers can be moved to the northwest by approximately 126 feet. There are currently two stockpiles
located outside of the northern marked boundary. If the boundary is correctly marked these piles should be
within the approved boundary. However, the Operator has a processing area outside of the southern permit
boundary containing a sandstone saw, and a metal storage container used for the operation. This disturbance
was estimated to be about .3 acres. This processing area is considered "Affected Land" as defined by Rule 1.1
(3) and must be contained in the permit area. This issue is cited as a Possible Violation at the end of this
report and will require and Enforcement Hearing in front of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board.
It appears there is a portion of the permit area west of the topsoil stockpile that has not been mined or
disturbed at this time. If the Operator does not intend on affecting this land, the Operator should be able to
submit a Technical Revision to the current approved mining and reclamation plan to modify the permit
boundary to encompass the processing area. However, if the Operator does intend on affecting land west of
the topsoil stockpile, the Operator will need to submit a conversion application to increase the affected
land/permit area beyond the currently approved 9.9 acres.
