r1 <br />Rock strength anisotropy is studied by comparing point -load test results in vertical (axial) <br />and horizontal directions (diametric). As illustrated in figure 6, the rocks are <br />approximately half as strong in the horizontal direction as vertically. This is shown in <br />figure 6, where values are scattered around a 2:1 ratio line. This magnitude of strength <br />anisotropy is very typical for rocks in the Somerset basin and is in agreement with past <br />measurements by Atlantic Richfield Company.
