Scotchman's Gulch - -- Plant Growth Medium Discussion with
• Reference to Evaluation of Alluvial Valley Floors
Introduction
A site visit to examine questions related to assessment of the nature of Scotchman's
Gulch relative to Alluvial Valley Floor characteristics was conducted on 9/23/09. The
transact indicated in Figure 1 was examined at the five locations as shown.
Soil Parent Material
In the valley bottom associated with Scotchman's Gulch, the unconsolidated material
present does not provide direct evidence of having been stream -laid. The undulant
contacts between materials (Photost and 2) may suggest that the material was
transported by side -slope alluvial /colluvial (probably mudflow) processes. Thus, in
aggregate, the material may be a coalescence of lobes of fine - textured material flowing
from the nearby upland slopes. The present upper surface has likely been somewhat
leveled by stream action.
•
0
•
Photo 1. Scotchman's Gulch profile exposed along current channel
