Peabody Sage Creek Mine — Drainage and Sediment Control Plan
channels generally collect surface runoff from closed and reclaimed Seneca II Mine operations areas
and route the surface runoff to the existing ponds. The existing and approved Seneca II Mine
• channels utilized in this Plan are summarized in Section 4.0, Ditch and Culvert Designs.
1.1 Operational Drainage and Sediment Control
The drainage and sediment control structures that Sage Creek Coal Company (SCCC) will use during
mining operations, including the existing Seneca 11 Mine structures, are shown on Map 2.05.3 M4,
Drainage and Sediment Control Plan. Existing, approved structures permitted by CDRMS for
drainage and sediment control at the closed Seneca U Mine constitute much of the operational
drainage control network utilized in the Plan.
The .drainage and sediment control plan covers approximately 3,605 acres: the drainage area for
Pond 002 is 3,028 acres, the area for Pond 003 is 30.1 acres and the Pond 004 watershed is 547 acres.
The extent of disturbance within each watershed from construction and operation of the Peabody
Sage Creek Mine facilities is:
• Pond 002 — approximately 120 acres. The disturbed acreage includes the South Surface
Facilities and Portal Area, the topsoil stockpile and Roads "A ", `B" and "B/E1"
• Pond 003 — approximately 13.5 acres. The disturbed acreage includes the North Facilities
Area (the old Seneca II Mine shop/bathhouse /parking lot area, as well as some ancillary
features)
• Pond 004 — there are no disturbed acres within the watershed.
• Office/Boneyard Small Area Exemption — this is an existing 5.4 acre SAE from the historic
• Seneca II Mine operations
An additional 56.7 acres within the Pond 002 watershed may be disturbed by Peabody Sage Creek
Mine operations. This area, located east of Road "A" in the old Seneca 11 Mine "Pre -Law Mine
Area" is being permitted as disturbed and consequently evaluated as disturbed in the hydrologic
assessment for the watershed.
Pond 002: Pond 002 is an existing sediment pond. Pond 002 is permitted by the Colorado Water
Quality Control Division (WQCD) as an industrial wastewater treatment facility. Most of the surface
disturbance associated with the Peabody Sage Creek Mine is within the Pond 002 watershed.
Consequently, the pond and associated drainage network were re- evaluated for this Plan to assure
Pond 002, in its existing approved configuration, retained sufficient capacity to meet the applicable
rules and regulations of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board for Coal Mining.
The Pond 002 watershed is approximately 3,028 acres; 177 acres or approximately 6% of the area
could be disturbed by Peabody Sage Creek Mine surface activities. The watershed is tributary to
Little Grassy Creek which is tributary to Grassy Creek. The pond evaluation is presented in
Appendix 2.05.3 -E2.A, Sediment Pond 002 Design Report.
Pond 003: Pond 003 is an existing, approved sediment pond. Pond 003 is permitted by the WQCD
as an industrial wastewater treatment facility. Pond 003 collects runoff from the North Facilities
Area — the historic Seneca IT Mine shop /warehouse /ofce area. The approximately 30.1 acre
• watershed is tributary to Grassy Creek immediately downstream of its confluence with Little Grassy
Creek. While SCCC plans to utilize the North Facilities Area to support its mining operations, the
2.05.3 -E2.2
