Table 3-5. Seed Mixes Applied on Areas
ft Revegetated in 1985
Two seed mixes were applied on reclaimed areas in 1985. Seed mix 1 was used on upland
drier sites and south facing exposures. Seed mix 2 was used in drainages or north facing
exposures. Up to 25 percent of the reclaimed areas were seeded with seed mix 2, while
the majority of the area was seeded with seed mix 1.
A new drill seeder based on the Laird rangeland drill was manufactured for Peabody in
1985. The drill was constructed with two seed boxes, one for large seed and one for
small seed. This allowed the drilling of the large seed and broadcasting of the smaller
seed. Seed mixes were thus split into large seed and small seed components and bagged
separately by the seed dealer. All seeding rates are presented as drilled rates.
Seed Mix 1 - Large Seed Component
Species
Drilled Rate
Scientific Name
-J
Common Name
PLS lbs /Ac
Agropyron dasystachyum
Y. dasystachyum
Thickspike Wheatgrass
2.00
Agropyron intermedium
Intermediate Wheatgrass
1.00
Agropyron dasystachyum
Y. riparium
Streambank Wheatgrass
1.00
Agropyron smithii
Western Wheatgrass
2.00
Agropyron inerme
Beardless Bluebunch Wheatgrass
2.00
Agropyron trachycaulum
Slender Wheatgrass
2.00
Ceratochloa marginat
Mountain Brome
2.00
Dactylis alomersta
Orchardgrass
0.50
Elymus cinereus
Basin Wildrye
1.00
Elymus iunceus
Russian Wildrye
1.00
Festuca ovina v. ovine
Sheep Fescue
0.50
Stine viridula
Green Needlegrass
2.00
Cercocarous lediftoius
Curlleaf Mountain Mahogany
0.10
Purshia tridentata
Antelope Bitterbrush
0.20
Atriplex canescens
Fourwing Saltbush
0.13
Ceratoides Janata
Winterfat
0.07
Rhus tritobata
Skunkbush Sumac
0.08
Nedysarum boreale
Utah Sweetvetch
0.05
Penstemon strictus
Rocky Mountain Penstemon
0.05
Linum lewisii
Lewis Flax
0.05
Total Large Seed
17.73 PLS lbs /Ac
Seed Mix 1 - Small Seed
Component
Phleum pratense
Timothy
0.10
Poa ampla
Big Bluegrass
0.50
Poa compressa
Canada Bluegrass
0.10
Astragatus titer
Cicer Milkvetch
1.00
Medicago sativa
Alfalfa
0.50
Melitotus officinalis
Yellow Sweetclover
0.50
Achiltea lanulosa
Western Yarrow
0.05
3 -5
