. clay, or silty clay texture (marginal rated) (WDEQ, 1996). Clay content exceeding 40
percent was generally rated as "unsuitable" unless other factors prevail. The
recommended salvage depths for surface- affected areas are listed in Table 3 and
discussed in selected map unit descriptions in the following results section. Topsoil
volumes for salvaged soils are included in the project mine and reclamation plan.
3.0 RESULTS
3.1 Soil Maps
Map 1 of 3 is the overall soils map of the entire Soils Study Area. The soils mapping was
compiled from the recent Order 2 Routt County soil survey (NRCS, 2008), the Order 1
survey areas for proposed surface - affected areas within the current Seneca II Mine permit
area, the Order 1 survey area between the Seneca II permit area and the TCC Foidel
Creek Mine permit area, and the southern portion of the study area located within the TCC
Foidel Creek Mine Permit area.
Map 2 of 3 covers the various potential Sage Creek Mine surface disturbance project
components within and adjacent to the northern part of the Seneca II Mine permit area and
for "Adjacent Areas 1" which is located in the hilly ridge "gap" area that is between the
south end of the Seneca II Mine permit area and the north end of the TCC's Foidel Creek
Mine permit area. New soil sample sites CC1, CC -3, CC -4 and CC -6 are located in the
• hilly ridge "gap" which includes a portion of the previous potential transportation corridor.
The Order 1 soil map was completed in the field on the recent (2008) photo -base map at a
scale of 1 " =250 feet.
Soil Map 1 includes several current project components including the "Spoil Stockpile,
Facilities & Portal Area ", as well as several previous potential components including the
"Waste Rock Storage Area ", the "North Site — Portal Area ", the "Middle Site — Potholes 2 &
3 Area ", and the "South Site — Potholes 4 & 5 Area ". New soil sample sites CC -2 and CC-
5 are located in the potential "Waste Rock Storage Area" which is outside of the Seneca II
Mine permit area. Soil Map 2 also includes a refined Order 1 mapping of buffer areas
adjacent to these components as well as the accurate depiction of all Seneca II Mine
reclaimed areas in the immediate area as shown on the recent Seneca Phase III Bond
Release Map (Seneca Coal Company, 2008).
Map 3 of 3 was completed for "Adjacent Areas 2" which is located primarily within the
Twentymile Coal Foidel Creek Mine permit area. The previous potential transportation
corridor was sited across this area. The soils mapping is taken from the Order 1 -2 Foidel
Creek Mine baseline soil survey and is compiled on a recent photo -base map. The
previous Foidel Creek Mine soils mapping was field- checked but no additional soil
sampling was necessary.
0 4
