II. COMMENTS-COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made during the inspection. Comments also describe
any enforcement actions taken during the inspection and the facts of evidence supporting the enforcement action.
Coal Ridge C-198465--
18 May 2010
Pg 1/1
This was a complete inspection of the Coal Ridge Mine in New Castle, Colorado. The inspection was
conducted on the morning of 18 May 2010 by Jim Stark of CDRMS. The mine has been reclaimed and
has undergone a Phase II Bond Release. The weather was cool and overcast and although it rained the
previous day, the ground was dry.
Mine Availability of Records: All of the necessary records were available at the Garfield County
Courthouse in Glenwood Springs. The records were checked prior to the site visit on the afternoon of
17 May 2010. Seethe records checklist at the end of this inspection for more details.
Signs and Markers: The mine ID sign was in place on the gate and contained the necessary
information (including permit number, contact information and operator information). The remaining
topsoil stockpile had the appropriate "Topsoil" sign in place.
Roads: The remaining road to the portal bench was stable and in good condition at the time of the
inspection. There were no major ruts or erosional problems noted on the road. Although the road does
get limited use by an outfitter during hunting season, it is filling in with grasses from the lack of use
most of the year.
Hydrologic Balance: - The ditches that remain at the site were all stable at the time of the inspection.
There did not appear to have been any flow in the ditches this spring(from runoff). No erosional
problems were noted in the ditches.
-The remaining sediment pond was dry at the time of the inspection. The pond embankment was well
vegetated and stable at the time of the inspection. No erosional problems were noted on the pond
embankment.
Backfilling and Grading: - The backfilled and regraded portal and facilities areas were all stable and
well vegetated at the time of the inspection. No cracking or settling was noted in the backfill.
Revegetation and Reclamation Success: - The Coal Ridge Mine has been reclaimed since 1995. The
site is well vegetated and very stable. There are no bare spots in the reclaimed area. The reclamation
blends in nicely with the adjacent areas and appears to be able to support the post-mining land use of
rangeland and wildlife habitat.
Overall the Coal Ridge Mine site is in good condition. This concludes the 18 May 2010 inspection
report for the Coal Ridge Mine.
