III. COMMENTS-COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made during the
inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection and the facts or
evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Joe Dudash of the Colorado DBMS.The Hawk's Nest Mine is a
revoked underground mine that was reclaimed with forfeited bond funds. The inspection frequency was reduced
to four quarterly inspections per year, comprised of one complete and three partials. There are no mine records
to check. The reclaimed mine has an east mine, a west mine and a separate bleeder entry for the west mine.
East Mine
The paved county road through the site was passable. The mud slide north of the road and just to the west of the
reclaimed east mine portals was at the edge of the road but did not block the road. The reclaimed east mine
portal area appeared to be stable.
The reclaimed east mine yard area across the road generally had a moderate vegetative cover. The riverside
berm was in place. The two riprapped channels below the two road culverts were in place.
West Mine
The reclaimed west mine portal area north of the county road appeared to be stable. South of the county road,
the dirt road leading to the west mine silo area was very muddy at the track crossing. The site had a good
vegetative cover. The sediment pond was dry. The pond embankment was stable and well grassed and the
combination open channel spillway was clear of debris. Stream buffer zone signs were up.
The reclaimed bleeder entry area, north of the county road and located about halfway between the east mine
portal area and the west mine portal area, appeared to be stable.
c:/word2007/hawksnest/insp0510
