Box 6z8
Nucla, CO 81424
Dear Ross:
Earlier this month we visited a 65 acre site known as the Rice
House Tract. We discussed several unsuccessful attempts to establish
vegetation on otherwise reclaimed mine site. The following Is my
recommendation for steps to be taken to enhance the likelihood of a
successful revegetation effort In the future.
The current reclamation plan identifies the post mining land use
as rangeland and dryland pasture. The approved seeding mix
(approximately 20 species) appears to be an attempt to meet or exceed
the requirements of both post mining land uses. The mix contains many
more species than the SCS would normally recommend. In terms of
managing livestock grazing after vegetation is re- established, it
would be more desirable to have fewer species in the mix and all 65
acres classified as one post mining use. I recommend that the
reclamation plan be revised to identify a post - mining land use of
dryland pasture on all 65 acres and the following seed mix:
SPECIES CULIIVAR Z.._QE MIXTURE
Fairway Crested Wheatgrass Ephriam 20%
Pubescent Wheatgrass 'Luna Z0%
Smooth Brome Manchar 20%
Russian Wildrye Bozolsky 207..
*RS Wheatgrass Newhy 10%
Alfalfa Spreador 2 10%
*If RS wheatgrass is not available, increase pubescent wheatgrass by
1.0 poLind /acre. See attached Form CO- ECS -5.
I would also like to summarize your options for seed bed
preparation that will need to occur prior to a fall 1994 seeding.
Option f#1 would be to disc a second time in the opposite direction as
soon as the volunteer winter wheat comes back. Weeds will need to be
controlled throughout the growing season through additional tillage
operations and /or herbicides. The field will have to be worked with a
harrow prior to seeding in order to smooth and firm the seedbed. I
have enclosed information on spring tooth and spike tooth harrows
since you would need to borrow, rent or purchase one.
