Re: Cotter Corporation, Schwartzwalder Mine, Permit No. M-1? 977-300, Request to
sample monitoring wells and surface water at Schwartzwalder Mine
Dear Mr. Whicker:
The Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (DRMS) requests access to the
Schwartzwalder Mine site for the purpose of collecting water samples the week of 17 May
2010. We wish to coordinate our visit with Cotter's routine monthly/quarterly sampling trip.
Sites to be sampled will include ground water monitoring wells and surface water from
Ralston Creek. Other features may be sampled if observed and considered relevant (e.g.,
runoff). Tony Waldron and I will be the only DRMS staff attending.
The exact number and locations of wells and surface water sampling sites will be determined
on site, but we expect to collect between 8 and 12 samples total. We will submit the samples
to an independent laboratory. The radiological samples will probably be submitted to the
CDPHE laboratory.
The surface water analytical suite will include the following:
Dissolved: Al, Fe, Mn
Total: Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Se, U, Zn
Anions: Alkalinity, Cl, F, N03, P, S04
Radiologicals: Radium 226
The ground water analytical suite will include the following:
Dissolved: Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Hg, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Se, U, Zn
Total: Al, Fe, Mn
Anions: Alkalinity, Cl, F, N03, P, S04
Radiologicals: Gross Alpha, Gross Beta, Radium 226
Parameters that will be measured in the field will include Temperature, pH, Specific
Conductance, and Dissolved Oxygen. DRMS will provide all of our own sampling
