Permit Amendment (AM-06) - Climax Mine
These areas have been reclaimed over the past 45 years using a variety of techniques, cover materials,
• soil amendments, and seed mixtures. The resulting vegetation communities primarily reflect the species
in the seed mixtures. Most reclaimed areas have been seeded with some variation of the Climax seed
mixture proposed in the 1977 permit document and modified slightly in the 1989 and 1996 amendments.
The dominant species in these reclaimed areas are: common timothy, redtop (Agrostis gigantea), smooth
bromegrass (Bromus inermis), orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata), red clover (Trifolium pratense),
common yarrow, and Cicer milkvetch (Astragalus ccer). Those sites reclaimed many years ago also
have a number of common native species such as tufted hairgrass, slender wheatgrass, alpine timothy,
and Whipple's penstemon. These same native species have been successful on several smaller
reclamation projects around the mine as well.
Interim vegetated reclaimed communities do not differ in composition from Final Reclamation, but are in
areas where they will be redisturbed during future mining activities. These communities include topsoil
stockpiles and steep slopes revegetated for temporary stabilization and tailing surfaces revegetated for
dust control.
J-3 Species of Concern
There are no known state of federal listed threatened or endangeres species on the Climax property. In
1994, Climax commissioned a site-wide survey of threatened and endangered species to assess the
existence or potential for existence of such species. At that time, biologists conducted pedestrian surveys
throughout the 14,000-acre property searching for state and federally listed wildlife and plant species with
the potential to occur on the site. The search included all water bodies and wetlands and ranged from the
lowest elevation on the property to the highest.
Four vegetation species were included in the survey: Leadville milkvetch (Astragalus molybdenus),
Penland's eutrema (Eutrema penlandi?), purple lady's slipper (Cypripedium fasciculatum), and Porter's
feathergrass (Ptilagrostis porten). None of these species were encountered during the 1994 survey.
•
C7
Exhibit J J-4 May 2010
