•
Cotter Corporation PROCEDURE Number: 3-4
Schwartzwalder Mine Page: 3 of 7
Golden, Colorado WATER MONITORING Revision: 7
Date: 04/15/2010
1) Assemble clean filter holder and filter, attach vacuum pump hose to filter holder, and place on open
vacuum flask.
2) Pour an aliquot (e100mL) of sample into filter cup; filter aliquot; and rinse flask and final sample
container with filtrate.
3) Filter at least 100mL of sample and preserve.
4) Triple rinse filtration apparatus with DI water.
2.4.3 On-Site Laboratory Filtration Methods
On-site Laboratory Filtration For filtration of sample volumes greater than 1 liter. Equipment: Plate-filter
holder; Peristaltic pump; 4 Liter capacity graduated cylinder; 0.45 urn membrane filter 102 mm diameter.
1) After initial cleaning, assemble filter plate with clean filter. Attach pump discharge to filter inlet and
discharge line to filter outlet. Place pump intake line in sample to be filtered and begin pumping, taking
care to avoid sucking off the container bottom.
2) Set pump rate at level that will not overload filter capabilities and flush the filter apparatus by filtering
approximately 200 mL to waste.
3) Place filter discharge in clean graduated cylinder and filter desired sample volume. Note: Samples
requiring Ra 226 analysis must contain a minimum of 3 liters final volume (filtrate).
4) Remove filter(s) and thoroughly flush filtration apparatus with deionized water. Retain filter(s) if
suspended analysis is desired and record the total volume filtered.
• 2.5 Laboratory, Analysis
Ground water constituent analysis is rotated each sampling event among sample locations. Current
analyses are listed in the "Schwartzwalder Sampling Program" document attached to this procedure.
Please Refer to Document attached to this procedure.
3.0 SURFACE WATER SAMPLING
All surface water locations are sampled on a monthly basis.
3.2 Location
Surface water samples shall be collected from Ralston Creek at the following locations:
1 Above Waste Rock Dumps; considered background AWD
2 Below Waste Rock Dumps; Ralston Creek upstream of domestic well A001
3 At the wastewater treatment plant discharge point when discharging) D001
4) Below Property Line; east property boundary of the site, compliance point
to quantify the overall influence of site discharges on the creek BPL
5 First bridge below property line FBRG
6 Above Red Hill ARH
7 Long-Lake head gate; approximately two 2 miles downstream of site LLHG
3.3 Sampling Procedure
Each surface stream water sample is collected using a stainless steel pail, or equivalent. Before collecting
each sample, the pail and sample container are rinsed out three times with the stream water at the
sampling location. The pail need not be cleaned prior to each separate stream location on any given day,
when the samples are collected from upstream to downstream. Samples are collected by dipping the pail
into the stream and transferring a minimum of 3 liters into the sample container.
• 3.4 Sample Filtration
Samples are filtered and preserved according to Section 2.4, 2.4.2 "On-site Laboratory Filtration." Sample
filtration and preservation must take place as soon after collection as is possible.
