Memorandum 3 February 11, 2010 <br />Geochemistry Review Ruby Trust Mine <br />analyses performed using EPA method M600/2-78-054 1.3 for measurement of Acid Neutralization Potential <br />(ANP), which involves reacting the sample with HCl and back-titrating with NaOH to liberate carbonate <br />minerals and other neutralizing bases? It is quite understandable, and expected, why the Net Neutralization <br />Potential (NNP) would differ between the two, but it is unclear as to why the ANP is different. <br />Analytes required by DRMS for SPLP leachate: Application is advised that on all future SPLP analyses <br />for this project, the following policy shall apply: <br />Applicant must analyze the SPLP leachate for all parameters listed on Table 1 through 4 in Regulation 41 - <br />Basic Standards for Ground Water. Unless these parameters are relevant to the operation, the applicant may <br />omit Total Coliforms, Asbestos, Free Cyanide (unless cyanide has been or will be used in processing), <br />Chlorophenol, Color, Corrosivity, Foaming Agents, Odor, Phenol, the Radiological Parameters Gross Alpha <br />Particle Activity and Beta/Photon Emitters. <br />To allow comparison of water quality data to aquatic life standards, the analyses must also include either <br />total hardness or separate analyses of Calcium and Magnesium. <br />In addition to the aforementioned analytes, measurement of the test extract p'H is required immediately after <br />extraction. Concurrent measurement of electrical conductivity (or specific conductance) is also <br />recommended. <br />Some non-regulated analytes are necessary in the interpretation of mineral weathering and leaching <br />processes. To differentiate between aqueous Sulfate derived from Sulfate minerals versus that derived from <br />Sulfide minerals, it is recommended that Calcium be included among the analytes. To allow evaluation of <br />ionic balance in the analyses, it is also recommended that the major ions Magnesium, Potassium, and Sodium <br />be reported. To allow evaluation of the presence of buffering minerals in the rock, inclusion of leachate <br />Alkalinity is also useful.
