The people who own and operate this mine have been
doing so with complete and total disregard to the rules that are supposed to apply to all
people. In most states if you disregard the Corps of Engineers, the Fish and Wildlife and
Game and Park Commission and try to create a project on your own land without proper
permits you lose all rights and privileges to obtain permits and that is just to move sand on
the river. Across the country where no people live, even with all their ducks in a row,
companies have had permits not granted to mine coal, natural gas and oil. It should only
seem fitting then that the people applying for this permit should have it denied. Not only did
they completely disregard local, state and federal law and went ahead and mined anyway,
but they are literally mining in someone's backyard. This disturbs the peace, endangers the
environment, and benefits no one but the lawbreakers. It would be a slap in the face to all
residents and to all authorities involved if this permit is granted. The simple answer is no.
No mining in LaPlata Canyon, period. No permit granted.
-Sincerely,
Dave Kingsley
4467 County Road 124
Hesperus, Colorado
