L b 2 2 1999
Supplemental Report: GarveylBurbridge Properties for New Horizon Mine, Nucla,
Colorado. James R. Irvine, 1996.
This report supplements the 1888 report prepared by Jim Nyenhuis for Peabody Coal. It provides a more
detailed survey of the Garvey!Burbridge property (henceforth referred to as the survey). Priorities were to
examine and sample a parcel of land in the northwest corner of the survey delineated as map unit 700. Secondly,
additional sample sites, throughout the survey area, were examined for salvage materlal depths. All sample sites
were excavated with a backhce, giving the examiner a clear view of the soil profiles to a cepth of bedrock.
Preliminary results indicate that The soil in map unit 7DB is not Sarx as previously repQrked, Eight sample
sites in this map unit indicate that the soil is Progresso which is not considered suitable for prime farmland
consideration. The primary factors excluding this sail from prime far--nland consideration are pH > 7.4 in subsoil
horizons and some surface horizons, high sodiurn adsorption ratio, and a depth to bedrock between 20 and 40
inches. tab results are pending, but will probably support these conclusions. This map unit was changed to map
unit 30Ct which is a monotaxa of Progresso sail with an inclusion of Band soil (Table 1).
Additional sample sites for salvage material depths resulted in a more detailed surrey map. Map units
were refined using original map unit nurnbersforcomposition, percentages, and inclusions to more accurately
reflect this survey. The results are in table 1.
The additional sample sites also y elded more accurate lift depths for topsail and subsoil_ The results are
summarized in Table 2.
Table 3 is a representative pedon for Progresso sail, sample site - 2, within the questioned prime farmland
area.
Table 4 is a summarization of lab results for sample sites 1 -6, B,
