Sherman
Executive Director
From: Sandy Brown
Ronald W. Cattany
Date: June 15, 2007
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
Re: Fruita Mine
The Fruita No. 1 and 2 mine, located in Mesa County, was an underground mine operated by American
Shield Company. A permanent program permit was never issued. Development occurred under a
prospecting notice of intent, issued in May, 1977. A $36,000 bond was forfeited by the Mined Land
Reclamation Board (Board) in March, 1994. The original reclamation was conducted by the operator in
1991. The bond was forfeited in 1994 and the Division completed additional work in 1996 to reseed the
bench outslopes and complete minor drainage repairs. Additional site work was conducted in 2000 to
repair erosion damages that occurred during a large cloudburst in 1997. During the past several years,
problems with the sediment pond and discharge structure have become apparent. To resolve this issue for
the long -term, the Division is proposing to remove the metal spillway structure and excavate the pond
embankment and accumulated sediment as necessary to restore the ephemeral stream channel in its
approximate original location. This project will serve as a permanent solution to the problematic sediment
pond and drainage issues at the mine site.
On a side note, $2,794.00 remains in the bond forfeiture account. The bond is filed under American
Shield.
Thank you for your help. Please let me know if you have questions or need information about the mine.
