Box 459 Director
Florence, CO 81226
RE: 2009 2`'d Quarter Report Review, Southfield Mine, Permit No. C-81-014
Dear Mr. Patterson:
The Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety has completed review of the 2nd quarter
reporting submitted for the sediment ponds, discharge monitoring reports, and waste pile at the
Southfield Mine, #C-81-014. Please consider our comments noted in bold text and highlighted, if
any, and make the necessary changes or adjustments in future reporting to the Division.
Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMR) - The DMR's submitted and reviewed reflect observations
consistent with Division monthly inspections during the quarter. No discharge from any of the
four sediment ponds was recorded and/or sampled.
Sediment Ponds Inspections- The inspection reports demonstrate compliance with Rule
4.05.9(17) for impoundments, which requires quarterly inspection of each impoundment by a
qualified professional specialist under the direction of a registered professional engineer. The
Division notes the change of the heading for the "Quarterly Sedimentation Pond Inspection
Report" to cite Rule 4.05.9(17) rather than 4.05.6(17). Two sediment ponds are located at the
reclaimed main facility site and two ponds are located at the reclaimed loadout. No discharge
was recorded at any of the ponds during the quarter. Observations on July 17, 2009 as noted
are consistent with field observations noted by the Division during inspections over the reporting
period.
Waste Pile Inspections - The report submitted and reviewed meets the requirements under
Rules 4.09.1 (11) and 4.10.2(2). Nothing of concern was noted.
We have no further questions or comments at this time. If you have questions, please call me.
Sincer ,
Kent orham
Environmental Protection Specialist III
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver - Grand Junction - Durango Active and Inactive Mines
