species list, including reclaimed and reference areas, is in Table 22 of Appendix 2. Seed mixes
used in the reclamation areas are included, for reference, in Appendix 3. Photographs of
• representative locations within the reclaimed areas sampled in 2009, as well as photographs of
the Aspen, Mountain Brush, Sagebrush, and Steep Mountain Brush reference areas (Seneca IIW
Mine), are included in Appendix 4. Graphic depiction of vegetation and climate data are
presented in Figures 1-10.
In the cover tables, columns labeled "Average Cover" and "Relative Vegetation Cover" include
only data from first hits. "Frequency", "Average Cover-All", and "Relative Vegetation Cover-All"
columns contain data from both first and second hits. In this section of the report, we will only
discuss absolute cover for all hits (from the "Average Cover-All" column), unless otherwise stated.
In the production tables, data are expressed as oven-dry pounds per acre (lbs/acre). These figures were
extrapolated from the average weights for the 0.5 square meter samples. For woody plant density, data
collected in each 100 square meter plot were extrapolated to estimate the number of individuals expected
per acre.
Interim Monitoring
2002 RECLAIMED AREA
• (Photographs 1-4)
Cover
(Table 1)
Native perennial cool season grasses were the predominant lifeform observed in the 2002
Reclaimed Area, contributing 30.6 percent all-hit cover. Within this group, basin wildrye (Leymus
cinereus), western wheatgrass (Pascopyrum smithh), and Canada bluegrass (Poa compressa)
were most common, having 10.1, 4.3 and 3.0 percent all-hit cover, respectively. Native perennial
forbs were the second most abundant lifeform contributing 12.0 percent all-hit cover. Western
Yarrow (Achilea lanulosa) was most common with 4.8 percent all-hit cover followed by blue flax
(Adenolinum lewisb) and Rocky Mountain penstemon (Penstemon strictus), each contributing 1.7
percent towards all-hit cover.
Total average vegetation cover, for first hits, was 55.6 percent. Total average vegetation cover,
for all hits, was 60.0 percent. Standing dead, litter, bare soil, and rock each had 1.9, 28.0, 13.6,
and 0.9 percent cover, respectively (first hits). Average species density was 29.1 species per 100
sq. m.
Production
• (Table 2)
6
