Section - 2.05.3
(G continued.) building. Additional details on the coal handling facilities are provided in the
subsequent coal handling section.
H. Temporary Coal Mine Waste Storage Axea - A temporary storage area has been established
for interim storage of up to 1,500 tons of coal mine waste. This temporary storage area will
be used in the event that coal thine waste disposal areas are not accessible due to weather
related ox other factors. Additional details on waste handling, storage and disposal axe
provided in subsequent coal mine waste section.
I Batch Weigh Train Loadout and Transfer Conveyor -Coal was previously loaded to unit
trains through a discharge chute in the base of the coal storage silo. In conjunction with the
1995-2000 mine expansion, the train loading system was modified to provide more system
flexibility and allow faster train loading, consistent with increased mine production rates.
The primary modifications involved installation of a transfer conveyor in the base of the
existing silo and construction of a batch weigh Loadout on an adjacent side-track. The system
modifications are designed to allow loading at a maximum rate of 6,000 tons per hour. The
new batch weigh Loadout is housed in an enclosed steel building and consists of a surge bin,
batch weigh bin, telescoping loading chute, and associated control and ancillary equipment
Additional details on coal handling systems are provided in the subsequent coal handling
section.
J. East Yard Refuse Pile -The East Yaxd refuse pile is the former disposal area for coal mine
waste rock. It is located near the sealed C-Seam portals. This disposal area is mostly
revegetated and was replaced, Etrst, by the West Valley Fill then later the II West coal mine
waste facilities. Additional details on coal mine refuse handling, storage and disposal axe
provided in subsequent coal refuse handling section.
K West Valley and II West Coal Refuse Piles -The West Valley and later the II West coal refuse
piles were selected and developed as a replacement fox the East Yard pile. The West Valley
and II West refuse piles axe located in the fast and second ephemeral drainages west of Elk
Creek. Both sites incorporate upgradient clean water diversions, perimeter drainage
collection ditches, rock underdrains, and sedimentation ponds, to provide for effective
drainage control. Additional details on coal refuse handling, storage and disposal axe
provided in subsequent coal mine waste handling section.
L. Main Haul Road -The main haul road is a partially paved and gravel-surfaced road which
connects the Elk Creek facilities area to State Highway 133. This road provides virtually the
only access to this Area. Haul trucks that haul coal to and from the facilities utilize this road.
The haul road extends from State Highway 133 to the coal stockpile areas and other facilities.
The road extends from the west side of the dump station and circles back to the east, around
the parking lot, so the coal trucks can return to State Highway 133. Portions of the main
access and haul road and the Elk Creek Canyon Road previously provided limited public
access to the cemetery located above the town of Somerset. Expansion of the Elk Creek coal
stockpile cut-off this access to the cemetery. Anew haul road constructed in conjunction
with the West Valley Fill refuse disposal area replaced the old cemetery road and is now the
main access fox the cemetery. Additional details on mine roads axe provided in subsequent
roads section.
M. Wes[ Valley, II West Coal Refuse Facility Haul Roads - In conjunction tivith development of
the West Valley coal mine waste pile, a haul road was constructed from the existing employee
parking lot to the West Valley waste pile and extending beyond the fill area to the Somerset
Cemetery. Extending west beyond the West Valley waste pile are the II West Haul road and
the Pond E light use road. The haul roads are designed and constructed for all-weather use.
Additional details on mine roads are provided in subsequent road handling section.
MR78 2.05-14 Rev. May 2006
