Stark, Jim
From: Watterson, Brian [BWatterson@peabodyenergy.com]
Sent: 25 March, 2010 14:26
To: Stark, Jim
Hi Jim:
I am requesting an extension of the due date for the 2009 Annual Hydrology Report (AHR) from March 28th to April 16th
2010.
FYI - I had spoken to Janet Binns regarding the following and obtained a similar extension for the Twentymile AHR.
There are a number of reasons for this request, which include:
• Background: When Twentymile was bought by Peabody in 2004, RAG took our oracle hydro-database, saying it
was proprietary. The consulting firm (Whiting Group) that developed the database took it to court and after a
few years won its right to use the database. We tried to re-create the database in late 2006/early 2007, with
some success, but eventually developed problems getting it to function in submitting our raw period of record
data. For the last few years we've been hand-entering data into excel spreadsheets for the water year tables
and graphs.
Background: In 2007/2008 Peabody St. Louis started looking into developing a company-wide hydro database.
In 2009 a consulting firm was hired to work on modifying some existing Equis software for the individual
Peabody mines, including Twentymile. This current product still has bugs and is very user unfriendly. Our
laboratories have been tasked to enter the last several years worth of historical data in order for us to catch up.
Peabody in St. Louis is helping me with getting out the data tables for the AHR.
On Feb 22, 1 finally received an extracted copy of our historical data base (1975 - 2004) from our old consultant
(Clark Whiting) who designed our original hydro-database. He has not been consulting for a few years, and
works for TIC in Houston. We have been trying to get his assistance for several months to extract the historic
data. The data is too large to email, so I sent a thumb drive via FedEx to my Peabody contact in St. Louis to
incorporate in the existing Equis Data base. They are almost done re-formating this data for Equis.
Thanks for your consideration,
Brian Watterson, P.G.
Geologist, Environmental Group
Twentymile Coal Company
29515 Routt County Road # 27
Oak Creek, Colorado 80467
(970) 870-2750
E-mail Disclaimer: The information contained in this e-mail, and in any accompanying documents, may
constitute confidential and/or legally privileged information.
