J
Huddleston -Berry
F,,f, rir.83 rc:Y A LT.0
r 1.0 INTRODUCTION
As part of extensive mineral resource extraction in western Colorado, the Moores
Gravel Pit near Gateway is proposing to expand their operations. As part of the
permitting process, Huddleston -Berry Engineering and Testing, LLC (HBET) was
retained by Moores Mining, LLC to conduct a geologic hazards and geotechnical
investigation at the site.
1.1 Scope
As discussed above, a geologic hazards and geotechnical investigation was
conducted for the proposed expansion of the Moores Gravel Pit near Gateway, Colorado.
The scope of the investigation included the following components:
■ Evaluating potential geologic hazards at the site.
■ Evaluating stability of slopes adjacent to mining operations along Highway
141.
■ Evaluating stability of finished slopes within gravel pit.
■ Evaluating stability of detention pond embankment dams.
- The investigation and report were completed by a Colorado registered
professional engineer in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical and geological
engineering practices. This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of Moores
C Mining, LLC.
1.2 Site Location and Description
The site encompasses approximately 38 acres near Gateway, Colorado. The
existing mining operations occupy approximately 12.5 acres and the proposed expansion
includes mining of an additional approximately 19 acres of the site. The project location
is shown on Figure 1 — Site Location Map.
At the time of the investigation, the site was generally open. The existing mining
operations, scale house, etc. occupied the eastern portion of the site. The western portion
of the site consisted primarily of undisturbed land. However, some old equipment was
observed to_ be stored in the western portion of the site. The western portion of the site
generally sloped gently to the south; however, steeper slopes were observed in roadway
cuts along Highway 141. The largest cut was nearly 100 feet high and sloped at nearly
1H:1V. Vegetation in the western portion of the site consisted primarily of brush and
small trees. Three small drainages crossed the western portion of the site and two of the
three originated from offsite to the north. The site was bordered by Highway 141 to the
south and east, and by open land to the north and west.
WA\2008 ALL PROJECTS \00966 - Moores Mining, LLC \00966 -0001 Moores Pit\200 - Geo \00966 -0001 R030310.doc
