The grade of mineralization is extremely variable in all ore
types.
EXPLORATION
0
At the beginning of the last century, exploration consisted simply of prospecting
for veins at the surface, then sinking a shaft or driving a tunnel to explore for ore
at depth. When a deposit was discovered, mining followed ore. Development
drifting along recognized ore controlling structures or contacts was completed in
hopes of discovering new ore shoots. Early in the life of most mines, exploration
and development drifting was usually haphazard; as knowledge was gained,
better defined targets were pursued.
Today, most new discoveries are first explored from the surface by geochemical
sampling and possibly geophysical surveys followed by exploration drilling. It is
only after the presence of potentially economic mineralization is defined by these
more rapid and less expensive methods that underground development follows.
Once underground, miners and geologists carve out underground drill stations
and extend long -hole drilling to explore the ground surrounding the underground
January 2007
May Day— Idaho Mine Colorado
