As indicated in Section 2 6 preliminary results of this study should be viewed with caution as
seeding of these plots coincidentally occurred in an "excellent" shrub recruitment year mine-wide. If
these plots were seeded one year earlier or later, the shrub cover and densities most likely would have
been considerably lower. For example, Unit EP042 (adjacent to the shrub plots) was seeded with a
shrub-only mix in 2002 and exhibits only 119 shrubs per acre after seven growing seasons. Large scale
use of the techniques employed in the shri b study (shrub-only mix, no topsoil) should be avoided due to
the possibility of revegetation failure and erosional instability (as indicated by the test plot results).
Cedar Creek recommends using heavy shrub / low grass mixes and thin topsoil applications on flatter
slopes (<10%) and on a contour strip-seeding design alternating experimental techniques with typical
seed mixes and topsoil depths. This would provide shrubs and forbs a less competitive environment for
germination and seedling growth while pry
"secondary" seeding from windblown seed
ng erosional stability to the landform. This also allows for
n neighboring bands of grass heavy reclamation.
CEDAR CREEK ASSOCIATES, Inc. Page 55 Colowyo Mine
2009 Revegetation Monitoring Report
