Mr. Robert Tibbetts, Mining
Supervisor, and Mr. John Cona, Plant Manager, were present representing the operator.
The Golden Mine is a 110(c) operation that mines clay as the only commodity. It is located in Jefferson County,
about 2 miles north of Golden and about 1 mile west of highway 93 on the east slope of the hogback. The total
permit area is listed as 9.0 acres. The Division holds a bond in the amount of $24,400 for the operation. The
post-mining land use is described as rangeland.
There was no activity at the site at the time of the inspection and the 2009 Annual Report, submitted 4 October
2009, states that no activity occurred during the report year. In a good year, which has not occurred in a while,
the operator will stockpile and remove from 12,000 to 15,000 tons of product. Production of late has been in the
range of 3,000 tons per year. Typical operations involve first blasting the material to free the clay (blasting is done
my a contractor and no explosives are stored on site), then pushing the clay by bulldozer down slope to the north
several hundred feet to a stockpile area, where it is removed periodically by truck and loader as the market
demands. A limited amount of underground mining was done in the past, but not presently and there is no plan
for underground mining in the future.
Only one minor problem was observed - we were unable to locate one of the northern permit boundary markers.
In accordance with Rule 3.1.12(2), "the boundaries of the affected area will be marked by monuments or other
markers that are clearly visible and adequate to delineate such boundaries." To be in compliance with the Rules,
the Operator must restore or replace the boundary marker and submit a photograph to the Division documenting
this corrective action. Operator must complete this corrective action within 60 days of the date of this report,
which will be 7 May 2010. This has been noted on Page 3 of this inspection report.
Otherwise, the site looks fine. Mining seems to be proceeding in accordance with the approved mining and
reclamation plans. There is a bit of weed infestation, but eradicating the weeds might cause an erosion or runoff
issue, and the lack of topsoil might make seeding with acceptable varieties difficult, so best route is probably to
leave them be.
A re-evaluation of disturbed acreage suggests a slight decrease over that reported in the 2004 inspection. It
appears that approximately 5.1 acres will be available for revegetation. Although the reclaimed acreage has been
revised downward, increases in the costs of materials and labor essentially negates the offset, and the required
financial warranty is close to what was calculated in 2004. No adjustment is therefore necessary.
I & E Contact Address
NAME:
OPERATOR:
Robert Tibbetts
The Denver Brick Company
STREET: 401 Prairie Hawk Dr.
CITY/STATE/ZIP: Castle Rock.
