appropriate to fill the container up as much as possible as to limit the amount of air
captured, minimizing oxidation. Also, a standard mercury thermometer is. needed to
record the appropriate temperature readings.
Sample Handling:
After completing all of the necessary steps of taking sample measurements and
procedures, it is important to follow the guidelines of sample handling. After capturing
the water sample, it is important to get the samples sent to the lab as soon as possible as
to not go over the recommended holding time. In doing this, it is imperative to have each
container appropriately labeled with time, date, location, and sample number/code. After
doing this, the first step is to get the samples to the surface safely. The sample containers
need to be properly secured, with lids tightly fastened while being transported to the
surface, as to not pollute any of the test parameter results. Once the samples have made it
safely to the surface destination, the next step is to either store the samples in the fridge
or safely pack the samples in a box for transportation to the lab. Once the box has been
appropriately packed with the lab test parameters and chain of custody, it is then labeled
and sent via UPS, Fed-Ex, or USPS to the appropriate lab.
Conclusion:
The purpose of the DRMS Mine Water Sampling Program is to collect water
inflow from multiple locations for certain parameter analysis to determine if the Bowie
No. 2 Mine will impact the surface or subsurface water. Throughout the observations
made for the annual mine inflow water sampling, it is evident through the field tests that
the water samples are similar in qualities. The pH values obtained from the monitoring
i sites 1-6 ranged from 7.9 to 8.9. This value corresponds to water that is slightly more
basic than distilled water, which has a pH value of 7. The average conductivity value
determined between the 5 monitoring sites, in which data was obtained, was 4.52 mS/cm.
From this collection of field data, it is conceivable that the water collected at each
monitoring site is not having a major impact on the hydrologic balance in or adjacent to
the mine permit area.

3
